I Lost My Grandkid!

I know of occasions where people have briefly lost their child in the store while shopping, but I lost my 18 month old granddaughter in my own house! How does that happen?

A couple of weekends ago we had five year old Connor and his sister Addie, 18 months old, for the weekend. We were having a wonderful time, Connor was able to go and visit with his other cousins while Addie took a good afternoon nap. All was going well.

After supper the kids were playing quietly and I noticed that Addie was not in the living room. No problem, I walked down the hallway toward the bedrooms calling her name, but no answer. After a couple of minutes walking room to room I was starting to get a bit concerned; where in the world could she be?

I kept calling in a very calm voice, "Addie, where are you?" Still nothing!

My tone was getting a little firmer, as I started looking in closets that I knew she couldn't open and under beds that I couldn't believe she would crawl under-but to no avail!

Suddenly I heard a little grunt... "Uhhh."

"Addie, where are YOU?" At this point I had narrowed this random muffled noise to the bedroom with the double bed, toddler bed and crib in it. "Uhhh." Where else is there to look in this room?

"Addie... Addie... answer Grandma!"--"Uhhh."

Totally perplexed and even a tiny bit panicky, I knelt down once more between the crib and the bottom of the bed lifting the white dust ruffle..."Uhhh." I am still at a loss, as I don't see her anywhere!

I turn my head toward the crib to push myself off the floor when suddenly there she is!
I keep the baby walker, which collapses pretty flat, under the crib. Well, there is our Addie, head crunched under the crib, sitting in the flattened walker with both legs inside the leg holes; obviously wanting to sit in it to play. I don't think she was in any pain as much as just uncomfortable? You think?

I started laughing so hard that I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I was torn between helping her get out and finding someone to share this with--so I ran and grabbed the camera. It was just too hard to explain to someone, I had to have proof!

Lo and behold, by the time I set the camera down, she had gotten herself out of that squashed environment and came crawling out.

I never thought I would misplace a child in my home, but as you can see, it did have a happy ending:)

My daughter Brielle was sleeping under her bed and I was looking everywhere for her. I was getting so scared I kept calling and calling for her and no answer until I saw her feet sticking out from under her bed. I know what you were going through trying to look for Addie. I am sure glad you had a happy ending though. SCARY! What kids will do sometimes. :)

That is too funny! Don't you agree..."If I had known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!"

I laughed so hard at this... I knew the whole time she HAD TO BE UNDER THE CRIB!

So funny! It's amazing how fast they can disappear. I lost my son in the house yesterday and found him under a bed as well. :)

Such a cutie and very smart to get all setup and ready to go! Thanks for sharing your story - although I was a bit nervous in the beginning, but loved the ending!

So happy you had a happy ending. We lost our 6 year old a few days ago at home. She was supposed to be outside playing, but when we went out, we couldn't find her. We came back and looked inside. It took several minutes before we figured out that she was coming in and out of the back door while we went in and out the front. :)

If it makes you feel any better, I also lost my own 18 month old daughter last week...We were all in the yard..(which is fenced) When I realized she was gone...At first I was calm too, except that after ten minutes, and searching both the house and the yard multiple times, and yelling her name with no response, I was finally pretty upset...Turned out, she had gone in the house, and locked herself in her room, and was quite happily sitting in her chair reading....sigh....didn't enjoy that too much....
